Has any-one kept trout before?
I have been thinking about it on and off for the past 12 months. I have the right tank, and filter system to make the tank as natural as possible.
What is the highest temp that they can survive in?
I can manage to keep this tank at around 20 degrees and under, but would 20 degrees be too hot for too long (4 months) for them to survive in?

Which species would I be best off getting?
Brown or rainbows?

I don't have any problems sourcing these fish as fingerlings.

I think that high a temp. would kill trout.

The upper lethal limit for Brown Trout is ~24 degrees C, for Rainbow Trout ~25 degrees C.

They handle long term exposure to temperatures up to 20 degrees C without any problem, even though such temperatures are not ideal.

A temperature range of 12 - 14 degrees would ideal for either species in a tank.

If you drop the temperature too low they'll barely grow...

cheers

i had 4 small rainbow trout about 6-7 inches in a 55g. about 72- 75 degrees fahrenheit. i set up a powerhead at one end of the tank to simulates the rivers and streams. they did well for the few months i kept them. then i got bored and released back the the river.

Hey, i was looking into trout a few months ago.
they are good, you can get them as fingerlings from a trout farm, if you buy 10 then they are 60c each!
lol, i love trout, so sleek and cool. I went fishing the other week in a secret spot ;)
and caught 2 brownies, saw so many though had more strikes than you can poke a stick at! and the ones i caught were over a foot long! (no it wasnt a trout farm)
