True/false hystrix?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The ray above is a "true" hystrix if referring to what ray keepers call hystrix, as in potamtrygon cf hystrix which is collected in brazil. Eg the ray we have come to know as hystrix. True hystrix in scientific terms refers to an entirely different species not available in the hobby which was first described in 1841 collected in paraguay and the type specimen was a male with disc diameter of 40cm which is much larger than cf hystrix.

I have the same question. Can anyone educate me as to how to tell the difference between true hystrix and false hystrix. Additionally, regardless of geographical differences are there any differences in full adult size? The below pictured stingray is a 6.5inch hystrix ray for sale but I can't confirm this as I haven't any experience with this species. Also what are the price ranges for a hystrix that can be expected? Thanks!
