Here's my hoplarchas psittacus I have 3 I kept and they were like .5" Now biggest one is like 4-5" can't wait for the colors to come out

Cichlids will go dark on dark sand and background. I keep most of my cichlids over silica sand so they don't try to blend in with the dark colors. You can have a black background and dark items like driftwood, but a dark background + dark substrate usually equals dark fish. It's why your chocolate is so dark, too.
This was my psittacus at 5" or so on tan silica sand with a black background.
And then at about 10" - 12" or so (with flash):

Awesome. I've got 2 growing out now, but they're only about 2-2.5". I've always wanted to keep hoplarchus! Mine have been pretty docile so far, not bothering tankmakes. The severums that I'm growing out with them, on the other hand...
...seems backwards, doesn't it? The hoplarchus are the gentle ones while the severums are being the a-holes?

Give it time. That will definitely change.

I should probably change to pfs but man it's such a hassle to rescape all that with the fish in there.
