Do true parrots hang out with uaru in the wild? I'm pretty sure they come from the same area. I have a wild parrot and I just added my 2 rescue uaru. Since I added the uaru to the tank my parrot is more out going and likes to be with the uaru they swim together. No fights no sign of aggrestion. I did put my little punk ebjd in another tank. He use to bother the parrot that could have something to do with it too.

So I wonder could the uaru be helping my parrot feel more at home. The uaru are 5" parrot 4.5".

This is the most peaceful cichlid tank I have ever had.

Psitticus come from northern Brazil and parts of Colombia and Venezuela. Uaru come from southern Brazil and northern Uruguay. So I don't think they'd meet in the wild.

And they certainly wouldnt "hang-out". Parrot prolly feels safer with the other fish or he just trying to get bucknasty with the uaru

They are both from the Amazon River basin, here is a link to fishbase:

Maybe you are thinking of Gymnogeophagus Balzanii?

I have always found Uaru Amphicanthoides to be very outgoing and curious, almost like an Oscar. Good chance that the Parrot has found comfort with them, not so alone, if you know what I mean.

Yeah I think it's something like that. Because they are all getting along in perfect harmony :). I hope it stays that way.

You need to click Occurences to get proper data. They both say Amazon Basin, but psittacus are from the Upper Negro/Orinoco (as Modest_Man has said, Colombia/Venezuela and Northern Brazil). Uaru start around the Solimoes (where the Negro meets Amazonas), and then pretty much travel east/south.

Here's the GBIF links to the information from fishbase (it plots it)

http://data.gbif.org/species/13533841/ (U. amphiacanthoides)
http://data.gbif.org/species/13544222/ (H. psittacus)

Uaru fernandezyepezi are a possibility.

The Amazon River Basin is about the size of the contiguous United States, so plenty of fish in the basin would never meet in the wild.

H. psitticus - Upper Orinoco (Southern Venezuela, Eastern Colombia), Rio Negro (Northern Brazil), also the following rivers in Brazil: Preto da Eva, Urubu, Jamari.

U. amphiacanthoides - This species can be found in affluents of the Patos Lagoon in southern Brazil, as well as affluents of the Mirim Lagoon in Uruguay and southern Brazil.

I am really interested to hear if anyone of the MANY people that have been collecting in Uruguay (including myself) has ever heard of Uaru Amphicanthoides in Uruguay. With my limited understanding of the Geography of South America, I have drawn up an image of where Uruguay is in relation to the Amazon River Basin. . .

I will send an e-mail to a good friend of mine that is one of the only licensed exporters from Uruguay and see what he says, I would call him and expert of the flora and fauna of that country, I hope to have a reply today.

If I am wrong, I would be glad to admit it :D

Also remember that at 4.5", you parrot is still a baby really. Or juvy if you prefer. Many cichlid school when young for defensive purposes, and at that size the parrot and uaru would have similiar type shapes (not exact).
