I have two small oranda goldfish in my three gallon aquarium about two inches each. I also have a koi pond, a goldfish pond, a fancy goldfish pond, and a small freshwater pond with an arrowana. The two goldfish were too small and would get pushed around by the others so I rescued them. I only feed them eight pellets each a day four in the morning and four at night. Goldfish are said to be messy and make a lot of waste. On their diet they are healthy, make little waste, and clean the bottom for me. I may be wrong but I think people have a misconception when they think of goldfish. Or am I feeding them too little?

PS. Please Do NOT comment on how cruel keeping them in a three gallon tank is. They WILL be moved to the pond and I know very well what I am doing.

I'm sorry if this seems like a dumb topic.

You are probably feeding them only a small amount or they have gotten a bit constipated maybe if they don't poop a lot? How big are the pellets? I recently rescued some 2" commons and I was able to keep the nitrates down to an acceptable level by only feeding them every 2 days. They were mega poopers! I had them in a 10 gallon quarantine tank. I did daily water changes though.

I would pick up a spare 20-40 gallon if you don't have one and you want to grow them out a bit until you can put them in the pond again. Will make maintaining them easier and they won't stunt. :D

I agree on the "messy" misconception. They are absolutely no more messy than any other comparably sized fish. I actually find goldfish LESS messy because as you say, they constantly root though the substrate, which breaks up debris and allows it to be taken away by your filtration. I don't have to gravel vac my 55g goldfish tank for this reason. There's little/nothing to vacuum up.

True that. My hornwort melted in my quarantine, usually it leaves a mess, but there was none in that 10 gallon! Haha. Maybe they seemed a bit messy since I only have some ghetto small filters for that 10.

Waste is also the output of urine not just poop.
I have a few different kinds of goldfish and koi. Are they messy? Yes, more so if you compare them to other fish commonly kept.
Are they the messiest fish out there? No.
I personally think that plecos are Talk about poop machines! Lol

I change 10% water every week in the arowana pool, the arowana pond is 15' round and 4' deep, and I have my own custom filter that cleans 20,000 gph. just curious why do you ask about the arowana pool size?

I want information on how to keep arowana off of experience. what temperature is it?
