Nocturnal animals are usually more active at night.
You don't say...

Supposedly red light doesn't worry nocturnal creatures. Seems to be true. I screwed an old lizard light into a socket and it casts a nice red haze around the darkened room. Obviously I can't leave it on too long, but it's good for a few minutes of red raphael catfish fun. I've also tried taping red cellophane over a flashlight, but I think it was still too bright because they hid when I shined it on them. Meh.

My Tanks:

Day: Tinfoil Barbs hyperactive, Jack Dempseys moderatly active but mostly hide, Firemouth active and schools with the tinfoils(weird), Pictus cat SUPER HYPER ACTIVE, Senegal Bichir chills near top on plant catching stray worms that float his way, Peacock eel nowhere to be found. BGK mostly in log occasional run to his top corner looking for worms.

Night(dark): Tinfoil Barbs huddle together in corner behind large plant, Firemouth in cave, BGK & Senegal free swimming all over tank, Peacock eel nowhere to be found, Jacks apparently watch me sleep(creepy, *shudders*), Pictus Cat still SUPER HYPER ACTIVE.

Early Morning(small amount of natural light about 5:30-6:00 am) everybody appears to be resting(even ADHD Pictus), except sometimes I can catch my Peacock free swimming.

I observe at night via the light of a Nintendo DS, works pretty good.

Lol. My leporinus used to peer out from his cave and stare at people that sat on the couch next to the tank. Reminded me of a peeping tom.

Well... yeah, exactly! It's amazing to see animals that are normally hidden during the day when you look around your fishroom at night:D
Try out either red, blue or white (in order of usefulness) LED moonlights. They will enable you to see the fish better, while not disturbing them nearly as much.
