i recently got a 9in female jag that was laying eggs in a friend of mines tank. he didnt want the fish anymore so he gave her to me. i alresdy have a 13in male and when i first put them together he started swiming all around her trying to woo her i guess. his colors got brighter and his fins perked up. she seemed unintrested so 20 min later he tried to kill her. that was about 3 weeks ago and know i think she is ready to lay eggs so should i put them back together or should wait till she lays the eggs and then put him in there. any advice would be helpful

keep them in the same tank with a separator. Once you see the female showing signs that she is ready to lay eggs you can try and take the separator out and see how things go. If he still is too rough with her you can always see if he will fertilize the eggs through the separator.

Hi. Jags (managuense) ? Males are rough and vicious. Be sure to remove the male right after the laying and fertilization of the eggs. Otherwise the male may kill the female.

Patience young grasshopper...:) I'de put a tank divider in myself and let them get to know each other. Assumeing your male has been kept by himself for most of his life, or been with other aggresive tank mates. Chances are he's looking at her as a threat to his territory not a potential mate at this point. Once they can swim near each other with the divider in place and not get "huffy" or better yet not want to swim to opposite sides and stay near eachother. I'de let them be together suppervised. This could take days or weeks, even monthes. And make sure there are plenty of hiding spaces for the female to escape his eye, and make the pair comfortable. you know, play some barry mantalowe for them. :naughty:

omg :screwy:

i put in the separator last week and he still seems pretty aggressive towards her. every once in a while i 'll remove the separator and he will start like dancing around her for about 5-10 mins then he'll just start attacking her

they finially laid eggs and know i have what looks like hundreds of fry in the tank what do i do next. i want to try and grow out the fry until they are at least an inch what next. oh they just hatched tuesday
