When I go to the LFS, I feel like all the juveniles in their tank look like females, anything I could do to perhaps snag a male out of them?:shark:

look for the one that has the least blue on its gill plate, you will also have better luck if you go ahead and buy a few and then re-home the ones you dont want later (this also lets you pick out the male that turns out to be the most colorful if you get more than one)

I thought the least color was considered female??
least color ON GILL PLATE, more color on rest of body = male, females will have splotches and spots of blue all over their gill plates but have less colorful bodies, picking the most aggressive and dominant of the group is also a good tactic

For reference, male:

Female:

also check the anal and dorsal fin the male will be a bit longer and come to a point the female is more rounded like most other cichlids just be careful harder to tell the smaller they are

So I had a juvenile Jack Dempsey, once again not really sure of its sex since its size. I went to the LFS and examined the fish for atleast five minutes and picked out the biggest bully in the tank thinking it was a male. When i brought "him" home he chills with the other one, now I think they are two females. Anyone have any pics of juvenile jack dempseys that they can sex?
