ive read different ways of doing it and yes im aware it could take several years of it before u end up with some nice looking fish.but my main question is what is better to use for the female? a blood parrot or a red devil/midas? ive read the main reason opting for blood parrot is so the female doesnt thrash the male too much.ive never had fish that seemed interested in breeding with a different species is there a trick to get them to want to pair or is it simply put enough females in and hope he chooses one

From what I've heard is BP's will breed pretty well like convicts. Convicts will cross with anything that's willing. The reason I always here of ppl using BP's is because of the redder coloration they have compared to Midas, red devil's, or midevils. I also hear of ppl using FH's more then the other 3 but less then BP's. Personally I would use the reddest female FH that I could find for the project, granted that's just me being biased to FH's. But out of the 3 you have mentioned I would go with the BP just because I hear it's far easier to breed with those. Even if you end up with more fish that lean closer to the BP Gene's they still look nice, I hear them most often being called crystal parrots. I'll attach a pic of one I found of Google.

the issue im having is the 4 blood parrots i have are too small i think to breed and i have a red devil 100% confirmed female.red devils can be all sorts of colors just like blood parrots just without veija genes. only flowerhorn type fish i have thats solid red and is female absolutely hates this green texas male i have for years these 2 just duke it out over and over till i remove one yet she readily paired with this kamfa male, issue with that is shes laid eggs 2 times both batches a bust so not sure if this kamfa is even fertile.idk what im gonna do but i guess just wait for now until these blood parrots get some size on them or he pairs with this red devil and see what i end up getting.or if they even pair since hes kinda picky apparently.ive never owned fish that crossbred or were even interested in a fish of a different type its strange, maybe just bad luck

Yeah some fish can just be really picky. Also with the FH's I would just wait on them, mine had to try 4 times before they finally got it right and had fry. I've crossed fish atleast a couple of times, never anything major tho. Mostly crossed endlers with guppies, even got a few "muppies" endler/guppies crossed with a molly, ended up with one that looked nice. Even crossed a couple of kirbensis types together, kind of by accident, mainly stuck a male of one specie in with 3 females of a different specie and Bam got some mutts lol. Didn't know they were different species untill I did a lil more research into them. I always hear of ppl making some crazy combos but have never been able to do it myself. O btw these are the muppies I mentioned. Love how the one got neon blue tiger stripes.

Always good to have one or 2 on hand. Personally I try my best to make cave like structures in the tank where the male can't fit but the female can easily go in and out. Granted this only works with males that are a good bit larger then the female they are with. Worked well with my original breeding pair of FH's but that was mainly do to the male being 3x as big as the female while also having basically a baseball glued to his forehead lol.

yea so far im getting a lot better at the promoting pairing thing, learning as i go but normally i try and put some caves in there to promote breeding as well as keeping the temp a bit higher than normal,so far the temp thing has worked without fail everytime ive done it,ive got all kinds of breeding pairs once i did that.oh and i try and place the caves near some kinda current to help prevent fungus .my eggcrate divider has a hole the male cant fit through if i go that route.with my red devil pair no matter what kinda fortress i built for her to be safe he'd find a way to break in so i just took everything apart and gave her some places she could catch her breath and just let the process happen..in that situation i feel the divider and the brick fortresses only prolonged what could have happened that 1st day.the chasing, the biting was all part of the ritual, but me as an inexperienced breeder didnt understand this.now i am well aware that at anytime the male can kill the female without warning so far that hasnt been the case and hoping it wont happen to me

O yeah I've even had/have it the other way around with my female FH and my male convict. My convict (lokir) used to be a massive ahole while my female FH was shy and skittish. Tossed them in together and wouldn't ya know it now lokir is hiding in his vase all the time while my FH just wants to kill him everytime he comes out to eat. It would probably go better for him if he didn't try to challenge her before he goes to eat everytime. Lol it's kind of funny whatching him come out of hiding just to square her up and them make a mad dash to grab a pellet from the top and immediately go back to hiding. So far have not been able to have her lay any eggs yet. I was hoping adding a male of some kind to the tank would do the trick for her but so far no luck.

been keeping fish for about 10 years everything from koi, goldfish in ponds to cichlids in large tanks.so far breeding them and growing out fry to start the process over again is a whole different hobby within fish keeping and i really enjoy it.i have thought about going the 300 gallon stock tank method for growing out large batches of fry.still thinking about it lol.

Lol wish I had a tank even close to that size. I could get into salt water then. My gpa found a fish he/I want but we need atleast 150g minimum just for that one fish. Been thinking of stealing my dad's 500g rain tank and converting that into a fish tank lol.
