Trying to do a wet/dry setup

I've been going through the forum and looking at people's ideas and diagrams and still don't seem to understand how to acomplish this. I got as far as getting a rubbermaid say 20 gals. I realize water flow has to come from the tank through the media and filtration you set up, I guess what I'm not getting is how to prevent and over flow problem if the pump malfuntions.

I'd say you have to have a overflow system in the tank (o.f.box/durso pipe etc.), and a large enough sump to hold all the water that would flow out during pump failure.
