Trying to get my stingray's onto prawns.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Over here, shrimp are sold boiled in a 'shrimp boil' that consists of several different spices. You can't find water-only boiled shrimp (at least in the last 2 states I've lived in). It's these spices that turn a rays nose away from cooked shrimp.

Good point, most shrimp/prawns sold in the UK are boiled in salt water but there are some available that have added spices so you need to check the ingredients on the packet.
Fresh uncooked ones are better but more expensive

I have had sucess with small salad shrimps.. I put the frozen ones with some water in the microwave, until they get pink and mushy.. Then I help the rays out a little bit by mashing them slightly with my hands so they are less tough, and softer.. I usually give them a few days off from eating before offering them new foods, but only with rays over 8"+.. Smaller rays its just better to power-feed them worms 5-6x a day until they put on weight and eat anything with gusto..

Its important that the chunks are small so they can eat it!! I have noticed the smaller the ray, the smaller the mouth, and the pickier they can be about shrimp..

I agree. a lot of people overestimate the size of food that a ray can actually fit in its mouth.
I just committed the same mistake myself 2 days ago while feeding my 10 inch tiger some large uncut prawns.

I noticed from underneath the tank, ( one of the advantages of a bare bottom tank )that the tiger is having hard time breaking the shrimp down so i ended up chopping it in half again.

Thanks for all the great input guy's!

What i'm going to do is seen as they are new rays i'm gonna power feed them for about a month or so on worms, then i'm gonna evaluate the situation and see if it's the right time to change them on to prawns, i love my rays so i think the little extra expence is worth it for now.

Thanks again Guy's

Dan.

i just buy boxes of 2 klg each size is 41/50 no heads.
put in a glass in the tank to get warm and than just give some all , some in peaces,
