OK
I havent had a pair of these fish in years and im wanting to produce some feeders. Ive had a pair spawn but it was over five years ago in a community tank.

I live in an apartment and can not have another 'large aquarium' so i went out and got a ten gallon last week. Added a HOB filter, sand, plants and rocks all from my main tank to speed up the cycle. The aquarium is heavily decorated as i was trying to create lots of hiding places. I keep my ph around 7.2 and the temp at 78f. I plan on doing weekly %50 water changes. Ive also added a single almond oak leave for the blackwater look.

I know the aquarium wont last long but should a single pair be able to spawn? I purchased a male and female today, they are both close to two inches and showing great breeding colors, the males very dark and the female has a bright pink belly. They are already 'dancing' around together and hiding in the rocks.

So my question is, even with such a small tank should i expect a spawn? After i get some fry ill move them to my larger (soon to be devided) aquarium to grow out. Any advice?

Thanks!!

A bigger tank will be a big help. Once they breed the bio load will jump, and a bigger tank means more stable conditions and a better likely hood of breeding. From experience convicts like things like small caves or terra cotta pots. If you have anything like that its probably just a matter of time.

Today I observed a small pair (had to be under 2") spawning in a pit they had dug in gravel with probably about 50 other fish in the tank (LFS). You shouldn't have any issues as long as you have a male and female.

i believe the females have orange bellies were the males have blue bellies. check that out. im spawning some too

My male doesnt have color on his belly, hes black and white while the female is much more rounded with the purple belly, she has a bit of orange on her too. Im pretty sure its a pair, they are pretty easy to sex but thanks :)

Id get you a pic but they are just dashing in and out of the rocks. Its a male and female, im sure of that. Just hoping for some fry soon!
