So, we know these species prefer tropical water temperature. But what's the lowest temp they will survive? I'm watching Jeremy wade on river monsters. He's fishing in Argentina and catching TSN and some form of giant piranha in what he says is "near freezing temperatures ". I ask because I would love to put my big cats in an outdoor pool in the spring and I'd like to know if they would survive in NC through the winter. From what I've researched,Argentinas water dips into the high 40's during winter. Thanks

TSN is a genus with many species. They don't have the same temp range tolerance. What we get here is fasciatum, so I'd focus my research on this species.

IME, both large fasciatum and RTC can handle 70 F for a month or maybe two. Short term, I'd not go below 65 F - they may not digest their feed right.

Doing an insulated tropical pond in cold climates is possible. Ted (anythingfish.com) has done it.
