are these all like, color morphs or each one has different coloring?

They are more than just color morphs but thats the easiest way to distinguish a few of them apart. The tiger shovelnose was classified into different species not all that long ago based on pattern/size/skull shape/and various other body traits. Before this true breakdown it was considered that Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum and Coruscans were the only species with Tigrinum being a sub species of Fasciatum.

I've had fasciatum at four feet plus. The trick is to not jump them up in tank size as they grow, but instead get them in a huge tank to start with. I'd say four is an good average max size. There will always be 'freaks' that outgrow any set number.

Well said. If you have to jump like most of us make sure it's only one or two times. Have the large tank ready when have you have to upgrade so you only have to move it once or twice. Mine still grow fine even though they have been moved numerous times. I think my biggest and second oldest tsn has moved from a 10 gal, 45 gal, 75 gal, 350 gal, and will be in a 4000 gal not to be moved again hopefully forever. This fish grew from 2.5" to 26" in just a year and four months, and is longer than my rtc even though a month ago it was the other way around.

good info comin in, but still not many big ones named i know you guys have owned/seen plenty of these so lets have that info

I have three currently and have owned three others in years past. The three current ones are all that I will comment on as I had no clue what I was doing when I first got the other ones. Now that I have my setups and maintenance down pat I delved back into large catfish. The first TSN that I bought almost two years ago is Lumpy. He has a common crainial deformity that causes the area of his premaxillae to become more and more curved as he grows. I have not found a name for the illness, so I call it fishy down syndrome. He grew from 2" to 18" in his first year, and then tappered off. He would have been 20" except for the extreme deformity of his premaxillae causes his snout to be way shorter than it would be in a normal TSN. He is now about 1 year and 10 months old and is right at 25-26". The second one was bought about a month before my rtc. This one is bumpy. He developed a small cyst or tumor on the tip of his nose and I removed it. I got him at 2.5" and now he is 1 year 5 months old and 27". My RTC outgrew him for a few months, but now he is longer than the rtc again. The third TSN I've had for 10 months now and he is 16-17" long. His name is dumpy as he has a slightly less severe curvature than lumpy. So I have Lumpy, Bumpy, and Dumpy. They are all still very young TSN and who knows how large they will grow to in the next 3 years. My RTC x TSN is four years old and 38" and still has small growth spurts. He is still very young as well. I am hoping to have more than a few of my fish hit the 4'-5' mark.
