tsn hybrid and rtc growth

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's interesting, Houie. The hybrid eats less than the TSN by far (I don't think a few stolen pellets meant for the niger would count much) but puts on significantly more weight? If this is clearly so, then one could suppose that the hybrid assimilates/utilizes the food significantly better than the TSN.

That seems to be the case. They've been approximately the same length for a few months at least and the difference in girth is pretty plain to see. The ratio of food/growth is likely another of the many traits that make these hybrids well suited to farming.

Your report says that the father species, the RTC grows on par or faster than your hybrid. So, growth cannot be it or just it.

IIRC, I or we don't know what species of TSN you got either - it may or may not be the mother species of the hybrid.

RTC is an absolute pig. Definitely eats more than the hybrid and as much if not more than the TSN. The growth/feed ratio is what I was referring to as a desirable trait the hybrid possesses. Obviously I don't have a test group large enough and my methods aren't scientific enough to make a blanket statement about The growth rates of these fish species, just floating a theory about the hybrid and a trait that may make them a more profitable farm fish.

I can give you a reference point for RTC growth I got mine in July and he was two inches or so as of now he is over a foot long see the pics below

normally the rtc and hybrid eats about the same more than the tsn thats what mine does.

To answer the original question,
My hybrid, 10 months to grow from 2" to 15"
My TSN, 8 months to grow from 5" to 15"
My RTC, I didn't measure when I got him but I'd estimate he grew from 7" to 12" in 2.5 months.

my tsn took 5 months to grow from 5 inches to 13 inches
previous hybrid 23 inches in 1 year which i gave away now i only have a 7 incher

Sure, Houie :) I was just thinking along with you and stated what I stated for clarity. Thanks for clarifying it further.

IME, it is very hard for me to say who eats more when they get some size (1'+). I could not tell long-term with 3 hybrids and about a dozen RTCs and half a dozen TSNs in my 4000 gal. All sub-adults. It'd appear that they were never satisfied and wanted to eat until they'd explode.

There are great many highly individualized factors in everyone's tank. We need dozens and dozens or hundreds of reports from many keepers to even attempt to classify these three as eaters with respect to each other, IMHO. Or a few fish farmers to offer their firsthand experience with thousands-to-millions of these fish that they farm. But even then, I think the diet plays a great role. With dry foods one may get one result, with fleshy foods like fish an crustaceans another, with a varying mix of both yet another, and so on.

Everything bears on fish growth, genetics, water parameters, temperature, size of enclosure, hormones in the water, etc. etc. etc.
