Thanks guys! all the input has helped raise him up.. and he is a big baby! His whiskers as you can see have pretty much regrown compleately. Ben I will def check ot your post here.
I had a freak "accident" happen involving floating plants.. someone shredding them.. filter getting clogged... cold temps.. and ammonia spike... ended up loseing my RTC... and the TSN's whiskers where burnt down to nubs... the filter strainer has since been covered by a large sponge and the tank moved into a warmer basement. by our best guess.. the plants clogged up the filter ( a HOB emp 400) and the trickle wasn't enough to keep the water circulating to keep the heater heating the tank... and it was in the middle of our moving ect so the tank wasn't discovered for about 12-24hours. TBH i was amazed the tsn made it... and also in the middle of WI's winter... The RTC was belly up when i found them, and the tsn was wobbleing... I pulled him and tossed him into one of my other tanks and crossed my fingers.. he pulled threw.
Also another Q... hes been moved into the tank w/ my hybrid... and shredded him pretty good.. there is about a 2" difference between them. The hybrid is hideing atm. Is he likely to continue the aggression or was he likely just "claiming" the tank? he was moved into the hybrids tank about 5 days ago now.... or do I need to seperate them?
Depends what you mean by "shredded him pretty good". Normally and with enough room, they should not pay any attention to each other. I am surprised... but a lot of things do still happen outside of the "normal". I assume he tattered the hybrid's fins and the pecking order has been established but I'd keep a close eye on the situation.
still upsets me thinking about it, the RTC was really starting to look nice.
that exactly what he did I don't see any scuff marks or anything suggesting he made a go at eating him or seriousely maiming him but his top fin and pectorals are split up noticably.. tail and body appear just fine. I just gave them a good feeding, and the TSN has a happy belly... the hybrid hasn't come out yet but this is the first time he's been offered non-live. I also haven't notices any further aggressions or attack marks ect.
Yes! lol when I shake things up.. i tend to go over-board.. on the plus side... they absolutely love smelt! the TSN who's been very stubborn about live is going bonkers for cut up smelt! idk if it was the new tank ect or he just decided smelt was for him. the hybrid has since healed up and i've only seen a few minor rips since... likely still healing fin. TBH i was afraid the hybrid would beat the crud outta him, not vise versa... he's def got sass.
I also did abit more diggin and he looks very much like an Orin. sp. but like you guys have said i'll wait and see.
Since you said "they", it is safe to assume your hybrid took his first dead food and took it with gusto, right?
Necrocanis says the most commonly imported species are fasciatum, reticulatum, and tigrinum. My weak impression is any others are rather rare. I hope he'd confirm/expand on this.
Yes, the TSN gobbled up a bunch of chunks first at which point the hybrid came to investigate and tried a peice... the second feeding i did a few days ago they both came out and where hoovering like crazy. Now ot start stuffing them with a few pellets.
I would love to hear more on these guys and their sub-species and why certain sub-species are more common in the trade then others. I understand they are bred mainly as a food source... but why are the others not imported more? at a guess I'm thinking collection/importation laws for those areas? It's always nice to hear info from those specializing in certain fish. I for one absolutely love to learn as much as possible about the animals in my care but at heart i'm a generalist and enjoy learning/owning many different creatures so don't get to really become "knowledgeable" unless i learn it from some of the guys here that specialize.
