TSN tankmate question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
TSN are definitely pure predators. They will even stalk prepared foods. Watching them hunt is exciting though. How they gingerly swim to the other fish in the tank, and when one strays to close to it's mouth unsuspecting wham, bye bye fish! Don't let their flat heads and small looking mouths fool you their mouths open up to almost a full circle about 1.5x the width of their heads. Sometimes they can get theirselves into trouble by trying to eat something too large and it becomes lodged in it's mouth. Wait til you can have a larger tank dedicated to one of theses, and enjoy your cichlids in the meantime. My tsn are not skittish at all anymore in their pond. I love to watch them stalk shrimp I throw in. Very fascinating. True you can't pet them like tsn or the hybrids, but they are amazing predators and are simply gorgeous with their patterns.

Thanks guys, unfortunately I'm going to have to wait on this beauty, I would really hate to lose my cichlids and possibly a tank. I saw some for sale for $15 and after looking at pics and videos I was completely determined to make it happen, but alas as with most of my adventures in fish keeping, I must wait.

Don't worry you can do it eventually if price of tanks is the concern and you have the space why not go for a cattle trough? Mine costed me $150 for a 350gal 6' dia.

Funny you should mention that necro, I use a 55gal plastic drum with a heater and air for my water changes, since I have a water softener on the hot water side at my house, and I was looking at some cattle troughs a few weeks ago. so when I was reading the stickies and saw some of those used as ponds....

The only problem is the wife is only barely tolerant of my hobby. Right now I'm set up in the basement with a 55 and the 125 in the finished portion and she actually likes the way it looks. I also have a 29 that I'm growing out some fry, and technically not supposed to have, but I just got rid of two other 29s when I set up the 125 so for now she accepts it. I plan on getting a 240 in the future, but indoor pond, uhhhhh that will take some serious finagling. Worth a shot though right!!

OK lets say I do the pond. do you have it on the floor? what do you do for filtration, canaster? diy?

usually works best in a basement or in a garage, but in my expirience you can also make an insulated box and lid for it and keep it outside in the coldest of climates. You probably definitely don't want 350 gals sitting anywhere the floor is not concrete or reinforced. Filtration can be solved many ways. Canister unfortunately unless you get one made for koi ponds are not the way to go. Way cheaper and more efficient to build your own. I've used canisters, in pond filters, and working on a wet/dry. Wet/dry home made filters definitely the best out of anything. They produce way more benificial bacteria. Other filters use anaerobic bacteria, and wet/dry produce areobic bacteria, they take out toxins much faster.
