My 8 inch TSN took down my 6-7 inch gar a few moments ago and I just realized.. it's amazing how you really can't trust catfish, I'm glad I moved my bichir into another tank. Here are some pics of my TSN with full belly and my other gar which is slightly bigger (probably an inch bigger) than the one on my TSN's belly.. anyway I'm gonna miss that guy :(

sad ending for the gar

Are you sure of your sizes? Gars are very rigid and don't bend. With the numbers you provided, I'd expect that some portion of the gar would be sticking out of the TSN's mouth and the gar would be gradually swallowed and digested.

Should not be too much of a shock. Gars are slender. TSN mouths extend huge. If any fish can even remotely fit into a highly predatory catfish mouth girth-wise (not length-wise), it is at risk.

You may be right. As my gar had only a couple of days with me I didn't really know, I took a shot in the dark about the size. I will move my gar until he gets bigger. Is he ever going to catch up with my TSN?

TSN will grow much faster. IMO, when both are adults, the gar will still fit in the TSN's mouth. In a 10,000 gal tank, it may be ok or ok for a long while. In smaller enclosures, the risk increases exponentially.

I am not sure it is a FL gar. If it is, I did keep several FL gars at 1.5'-2' with a few 2.5' TSNs, RTCs, and TSNxRTC hybrids. After one of my hybrids ate a 3' long-nose gar, it became obvious that I need to separated the gars.

I'm really not sure it's a florida gar either.. it was sold to me as "Gar" and I Googled baby florida gar and I saw images of gars like mine and some spotted so that's why I thought it was a florida gar. What do you think?

I think I need a better, close-up pic and the size. Certainly, there is a gar forum here - those guys should be able to tell you even with that photo. There are 7 species of gar.
