I have recently acquired a tiny TSN cat. It has been my dream for many years to have a tropical pond, and I am finally starting to work towards that goal. I'd like some opinions on stocking for an 8 x 8 x 18-20 (approx 6-700g).

I'd like to have a Florida gar in with the TSN, and I am also considering rescuing a few other fish from various places, including a Niger Catfish and possible a large pacu. Would I need to worry about the TSN eating a Fl Gar, if the Fl gar is of a total length?

I'd like to hear any and all opinions on this matter, as long as they are on topic.

don't know about the pacu but i've done a catfish gar combo before (rtc, niger, florida, tsn, gator) without issues.

i dun like it is a good idea to keep fl gar with tsn catfish. i lose my gar bcuz i intro 2 tsn cats to the tank n my gar jump out tank. sad. i keep my gar for 5 years. its is 60 cm

definately not while they are both small. the tsn will quickly outgrow the fl gar and probably eat it. pacu is also not advisable. search an old member's threads (demjor) and find out why

That sounds like a good answer. I'll stay away from pacu. My TSN has grown almost 2" in a month.....Probably a lot faster than any gar will.

I can house them separately until the fl gar reaches about 16", then he will have to go into the stock tank with the TSN(I can still make a separator if need be).....Right now, the TSN is about ~5", and the Fl gar will arrive at approx the same size in a few weeks. If it was possible for me to get one closer to the 8" mark, would I then have to worry about the gar eating the TSN? Most cichlids I have owned, even the hungriest, wouldn't eat a catfish...

I am also concerned about tank temp being that I'm trying to mix a tropical fish with a not so tropical fish....Would 75-78 deg be okay for the gar and the TSN?

I apologize for sounding like a noob, but I am seeking advice from gar & monster cat keepers with more experience to avoid any fish getting mauled.

Thanks for all of the helpful advice.

Uh oh! I'll keep that in mind....Anyone else successfully keeping them together? If so, what was your grow out method?

Also, what other similar sized predatory species that stay under 3' could I keep with these guys without too much heterospecific drama?? I'd like to stick with the less aggressive fish if possible. No Aro's, CK's, or other cats, as I've heard too many bad stories.

I am more than willing to grow out all of the fish to a similar size in separate aquaria. Any more advice on TSN husbandry would be nice as well. I have read many stickies, but sometimes I find that different sources clash. I hope to hear from more advice out of the Gar & TSN keepers. Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

So, What do you keep with your TSN???

How about a shoal of Pbass?

What do you have against Aros????

I don't have anything against them, but if I got an aro, it would have to be in a glass tank. Same with p-bass... Too much beauty to view from top.

I also hear that p-bass need extra high temps to ward off disease.....I'll be keeping this tank around 75....80 at most. I want to be able to use a smaller heater and just keep the room warm, which should also cut down on moisture in the air so I won't need a dehumidifier.. I'm fairly set on trying a Fl gar with him, so we can't get too tropical anyway.

Is my way of thinking correct?
