TSN with Fl Gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i kept in a 180 gallon aquarium a 16" Florida Gar, 22" Tiger Shovelnose, 2 - 17" Pacu, and a 16" Common Pleco. The difference between my situation than everyone else, is that I acquired mine at their large sizes and didn't grow them out. But the only problem I had was my Pleco was attacking everyone....

On our first day together, I watched him swallow a guppy that was nearly as long as him. His belly looked like it was about to pop! I'm thinking everything will be okay as long as I keep them separated until the gar is as big as the TSN.

Thanks for everyone's advice, although I still welcome more. Feeding regimen is something I've been pondering too. I will be looking to get the TSN off of live as soon as he reaches a size to where I can starve him for a couple of days with no ill effects.

Well, I finally have the gar and the TSN. My gar is approx 11-13" long and my TSN is approx 5-6" long. Do you think they can coexist?

What do you guys think? I currently have a plump 8-9" peacock eel in with the Gar that the gar has shown no interest in eating.

It's safe to assume the catfish will quickly reach the length of the gar and then surpass it, since your gar is approaching its growth slow-down at the one foot mark.

Things should be fine now, but I've seen people post pictures of big catfish eating little gars, so just keep your eye on it after they reach the same size.

i have had 3 tsns with my gar in a 180gal. i had them mixed till the gar was 17"+- and the tsns were 24". i got the gar before the tsns and then added the tsns. my gar attacked the cats when they were smaller then it, but then it was fine with them. my gar also has eatten a jurunese, lima cat and several bullheads. i would watch the gars agresstion tward the cats. i don't have exp. with the mix at full sizes, but thats what i got. i have a vid of them together as they were fine after some time. good luck.

oh, by the way those 20"+ tsns in the vid were 5-6 months old. had to sell the cats cause my pond plans fell through.

this is the vid of them

Nice gar! I think my TSN is too big to be eaten whole by the gar, but I will give them a little more time apart to let him catch up after hearing about your gar aggression. So far, my gar has been a gentle giant, and does not even notice the 8-9" peacock eel he's rooming with.. He just hangs out in his fancy-plant waiting for an unsuspecting guppy to paddle by. He is not scared of me and does not attempt to bite or run when my hands are in the tank.

it could have been my gar, but the lima was 13" and the gar was 19" when it kill it. it was good with the tsns, but it could also just be that my gar has a catfish fettish.

I'm going to try again with a different gar later down the road. This one has turned into a little (attempted) murderer. Luckily, he gets caught in the act and not afterwards, so everything is still living.
