i have been offered a really nice 2.5-3" wild caught TSN but i only brought a 3" Jardini aro a week ago, i know i could keep the jar bigger than the TSN until it is fully grown but i am worried about when the aro is fully grown and the cat is still growing. so my questions are, what is te realistic size of most captive TSN ( i'm presuming fasciatum or tigrinum...) and would it be a big risk to my jar when its fully grown?

I've never really had any problems with jardini and any catfish (as long as there similar in size )
im no tsn expert but imo both fish should reach 2ft , I think the cats growth would be slightly quicker but don't see a problem with keeping them together
Anyone else ?

thats what i am thinking, i'll wait for a few more answers but i think i will give it a try :)

you ever kept cichlids like p.bass with yours Danny? i was thinking about getting some occels or tems but don't want any tank wars if i can help it lol

This is an on going argument I have with my mate who keeps assume with bass , I dont think bass are tuff enough at small sizes to put up with constant jardini pressure , imo if you put maybe five in they may stand a chance in a shoal , although bass have the big mouth needed to stick up for themselves there still very fragile when young so its always a gamble (and bass are an expensive gamble ;))

thanks bro, the jar seems passive atm but that will probably change when he grows a few inches lol i might try it out and just keep a close eye on the bass, they are easy enough to sell if it doesn't work out :)

It certainly will Shane you'll notice the change at around 6" they start snapping at tank mates for no reason bullying , you never know until you try though mate and like you say bass are easily sold on and hold there value
PS I need to get on a PC to except fr :)

Well fed TSN will massively outgrow the jar in both rate and eventual size. Fed sparingly it will likely be ridiculously aggressive at the jar's feeding times. If you manage to keep growth rates similar by limiting TSN feedings you still have to deal with the attitude problem that is rather common in jars.

Overall I think it's a bad idea. Could work but there's a lot of potential for problems.

i've had a tsn and a jar before but not together and i would say the tsn that i had grew slower than the jar and never had any aggression or predation even with smaller fish, was i just extreamly lucky with him? i have been told by a few people that jars are usually ok with catfish but in any case i will be prepared to rehome any fish i add if things don't go to plan. my main concern is my jardini becoming lunch when they are both fully grown, i personally haven't seen any captive tsn over 2' but i know in the wild they can grow much bigger... i will have to think on it for a bit

I am with Houie for sure but must add that underfeeding a pet for your purposes of convenience is not an acceptable practice in my book.

I am surprised at the slow growth of your TSN. Not that it does not happen. It's rare. Was not your TSN kinda strange in color and in the absence of growth past 1.5'? I am much more surprised at your TSN's absence of predatory practice. That ~ never happens (with healthy TSN).

In any case, IME TSN will grow to massive 2.5', 10-15 lb in ~3 years, while jardini will still be ~1.5' and slender, ~2 lb. But I think it would be eaten long before that (as a rule, not that there are no exceptions).

My 2.5' TSN was served a $300 dinner plate in the form of 1.5' Jardini aro by stupid me once. At ~3' he could put away 2' silver aros. Both types of aros were new comers in a 4000 gal 40'x6'x3' pond. If raised together or if the order of intro switched, things could be different but I'd imagine sooner or later TSN will eat up the aro and will go "You pleased my palate, Master! Got anything else that good?"

i agree but i am not talking about starving it, i am talking about feeding just what it needs, yes my old tsn did look kinda different than the usual fasciatums and no i couldn't keep him to grow out unfortunatly.
i had him from around 4" and he was always kept in good water and showed no signs of bad health.

yea thats what i am worried about, i'm so tempted to try it but theres no second chances with catfish lol i will have a good think about it but i probably won't risk it.

thanks for the advice
