Turn over rate question??

I'm tempted to ask if you did the math, but, 3600 devided by 45 = 80, times 5 = 400 GPH @ 0' head (give or take the number of seconds your original calculation may vary by) . What is the vertical distance between the outlet of the pump and the return outlet in the tank ? This will give us an idea of how much less the actual number will be.
We'll deal with the FX5 separately(that's the easy part).

OOO you meanie!! You beat me !

UMMMMM.....

5 gal/45 seconds = 0.11 gal/s ; We know 3600 s = 1 hr ;)

(0.11gal/s) * (3600s/1hr) = about 400 gal/hr [seconds cross-out]

Calculator math :nilly:
You have to excuse my method of calculation. Back in '68 in the third grade when I learned it we did'nt have calculators. I did have a very cool slide rule (still have it somewhere).
I suppose I should apologize to fishtician for the subtle jab , but, I have a tough time with lazy. You have to admit, Fishtician old buddy, I gave you the formula and you still asked me to do it for you. Having said that I really don't mind helping you with this , it protects my mind from atrophy.

alexmuw, did you have anything substantive to add or are you just "trolling" ?

No, I did the math, and came up with the 400GPH. Which with a sump alone, that would be only a little over a 2X turnover rate, correct? (180 Gal. Tank). What I'm baffled at, is the fact that when I bought this tank, the sump was the only thing running for filtration. ( 30 Gal. Sump filled with Bio Balls). Without ever owning a sump OR a tank of this size, I still thought that this was inadequate. Thats why I purchased a FX5 with the advice from MFK members. I'm pretty new to the "monster tank Scene" and I guess, just a little unsure, if I'm doing the best I can for my fish. I apprerciate all the good advice on this site.

Thanks,
Scott

Turnover rate is a hotly debated subject on this forum.
The quote from MeAko at the end of this post accurately reflects my opinion on this subject.

Unless you are just into spending money or keeping up with the Jones's I suggest taking opinions (mine included) with a grain of salt.

Unless your fish require a certain amount of current to mimic their native environment then water quality and mechanical filtration should be the deciding factors on turnover rate.
My 240 does fine with 4x. You should have a 5 to 6x turnover rate with your current equipment. If water parameters are acceptable and mechanical filtration is adequate then the only reason to augment would be bragging rights.

 Maybe take a look at the time stamp before feeling insulted or accusing someone of trolling:screwy: Obvious that alexmuw was working on his post the same time you were :duh:

Thanks, Thats what I was looking looking for. The sump was a learning experience, at hand, but thanks to MFK site, it wasn't that bad, to get it up and going.
