Turning off heaters now that spring is here!?!?!???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have about another month or so before I can shut off my heaters and still have the water at a comfortable temperature.Just as stated already,if the temps are too low my fish will stop eating.

I always unplug heaters as temps warm here in May or June.
My pumps supply plenty of heat once room temps hit the low 70s.
In winter, room temp in my house is low 60s, perfect for tanks with Gymnogeophagus and Australoheros, that need a cool down period.

Mine has been off for the past few days. My house stays warm.

well they technically do Pull energy just from being plugged in though

No, they don't. When the thermostat is in the off position the circuit is broken and no electricity flows.

Everything that's plugged into an outlet leeches electricity into the air. Turn everything off in your house but leave it all plugged in. Your electric meter will still spin. Slowly.

Looks like I'm going to unplug the heaters in my community tank today.

This is true when using a mechanical thermostat. Digitals take a couple watts but not worth unplugging IMO.

True, although it is probably less than a watt.

Electricity doesn't leach into the air - where have you heard this? A heater with a mechanical thermostat (as most have) will not draw electricity when off.

Well, your heaters shouldn't turn on until the water temp falls below whatever temp you set them at... So turning them off really shouldn't be necessary?

This is exactly right. Personally, I have more confidence in a pair of heaters than the weather outside or my thermostat inside. No $ cost to potentially save my fish is an easy call.
