You really don't need to chime in on this topic. CA is not Zone 4.

thanks for those suggestions. I have also been told to get a valve for it to solve the problem. Seems like the best solution for now. And no we do not share a yard, it is just that my pond is on the side closer to his house and he sleeps with his window open so the "noise" is closer to him then it is to my open window.

I also plan on getting a heater at the bottom at the pond where it is the deepest (about 3ft.) and a deicer on top to keep a section from freezing solid. Now I've asked some people and they are telling me if the hole in the ice from the deicer is too big windchill can get into the water and the water won't be insulated. :(

Some people also say don't run the filters/falls in the winter since it makes the water even colder. I have to say otherwise....

Some things work for some and not for others. Just get as much info., from different sources, before you make a final decission. I don't use a heater or cow trough heater since I had a bad result with one the first winter. Now, I run my pond 24/7/365. Chicago last winter had a week of below zero, with night time temps. in the -15 to -20 range. Windchills were from 20 to 40 below zero. No winter kill on any of my goldfish, koi, channel cat, or frogs. Again, as much research as poss. before the winter comes.

they ahve pond heaters specifically designed to prevent it from freezing over. they create a little circle hole in the ice, you should chekc them out.

Heres the problem. I live in Ontario Canada. It gets pretty hot in the summer, about 20 - 30 degrees CELSIUS, and for you americans 68 - 86 Farenheit. And in the winter the temperature can drop to about -25 degrees faranheit here. If i lived in a warmer climate I'm sure 2.5 feet is no problem, but I'm really doubting the fish can survive a Canadian winter.
LOL! 68-86 HOT in ct we call that sweatshirt weather! but seriously your pond is too shallow

its not as cold here in vancouver as it is in ontario, but using a heater in my pond plus keeping the surface moving with the fountain in the center keeps my pond from completely freezing over. but there are little ice patches around the edges. i'd definetly say go with a few heaters as one might not do it. (i needed 2)

Thanks for the replies guys, really appreciate it.

However I don't want my whole pond to be melted.I just want to make sure that they have space in the bottom, and a hole at the top. I read somewhere that the ice ontop of the ice helps insulate the pond really well, espicially with all the snow we get here in Toronto, Ontario, really helps keep the fish away from the windchill. Do you guys think that 2 - 3 heaters will suffice in keeping the bottom unfrozen but the top frozen?

The bottom shouldn't freeze provided there is enough depth. A heater placed in the bottom might be a waste. Anything over 4-500 gals. would need at least 3, 300 watters. The pump placed just below the surface will keep a small hole open up top.

The problem is that I don't have the correct depth. The contractor managed to lie to me and tell me it was being built up to 4 ft. When it could only reach 2.5 ft in certain areas. (Always measure the dimensions yourself before paying the damn guy your cash to build something u don't want). I don't want to heat the entire pond, just a small area where the fish can huddle up.
