Turning Saltwater Fish into Freshwater!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
do not do it man ur asking for ur fish to die and also saltwater setups are not that difficult to setup and maintain u jus have to have a lil common sense

General speaking - Don't even try it.

Stick with a Saltwater, or a freshhwater. If you want something in between good Brackish.

Both saltwater & freshwater have some very cool types of fishes.

But don't try to take a saltwater fish an put into freshwater, that's just a bad idea.

Remember it hundreds of thousands(maybe even millions) of years for freshwater rays & eels to convert from a saltwater to fresh, on a long term basis.

Yes, there are certain saltwater fish that are able to survive in freshwater for up to a couple of weeks at a time. And certain freshwater fish that can survive in saltwater for up to a couple of weeks. But none that can go from saltwater to freshwater on a long-term basis.

Hello.
Just thought I'd add a bit. The reason this won't work are ostmotic stresses and how the fish's renal systems work . They'll seem fine for a couple of days or weeks as other members have stated then their kidneys shut down and they die! In s.w. the fish tend to have less salt in their bodies than the surrounding ocean water so they have to drink all the time to maintain a fluid balance. In f.w. the situation is reversed. As was stated some critters can make the switch but, not many and not for long.

Bad idea. You can turn FW molly's into full salt. Also a Bullshark can live in fresh water for up to 3 years then he needs to go back to salt.

Salt set ups are about as difficult as a complectated fresh set up. The only real differnce in actual things you need is a skimmer. And salt of course but it is much much easier to keep your marines alive in their appropreate conditions.

About as difficult as trying to turn a fish into a land animal. LOL

:WHOA: I didnt know about all this!

Thanks for the advice folks! I sure wont be touching it if it hurts the fish so much!

My firend and I got a Spotted Puffer that was already aclimated in saltwater and we aclimated it to Brackish. So we didn't go all saltwater, but the puffer was extremely stressed for the next 2 weeks. It was doing ok after that. It didn't have the bright green that it used to, but it lived.
