turning swimming pool into a pond?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a 6' round inter kiddie pool I used for catfish and my old orbignyi. It worked great. I even modified it for a long term set up then sold it when I needed to make space in my house. Here's a short video of the ray. http://youtu.be/I4zu7f4le70

I'm really happy I turned my pool into a pond. If I hadn't I'd be spending my time maintaining a pool I never used.

Glad it worked out for you. You have any words of wisdom for the op? Like what were the most challenging aspects of the conversion? And everybody loves pics......just sayin :D

Duncan, I read your thread today, very interesting, and fantastic pond.
Wonder if you'd thought about fish from Uruguay and Argentina, the climate there is much like Texas, and there are cichlids, plecos, and many others that can take temps down into the high 40sF.
I keep Uruguayan cichlids in my outdoor pond in Wisconsin late April thru Oct where water temps swing from the high 40sF to 100'F.
I need to bring them into the basement in Oct because my ponds freeze solid in winter.

I wish I had a swimming pool to make in to a pond. I need to get a Intex Easy Set Swimming pool. And keep it in the box till I have a problem with my big tank then I can fill it with the tank water and put the fish in it.

My Uruguayan cichlids aren't that large, the pikes are 6-7"so far, the Australoheros about the same, but the are those that get much larger.

I believe some of the Crenicichla pike get large, and some of the Cichlasoma sp also do.
MFK member Matt (dogofwar) has been to Uruguay and see them first hand.
I believe Dorado also are in Uruguay as are several Serrasalmis sp

The ceibals (directly above), breed like crazy, I pulled the fry below from 50'F water.
