G'day guys.

I need help with both of these.

I've been given a range of numbers for turnover, and a few different veiws on how i should design my sump.

The sump tank i can use is 4'15"x18", and thats allready here, so no choices there. I will be running a fluval fx5 in conjuntcion with the sump, so i can put water clearing stuff such as purigen and zeolite in it etc. The fluval is rated at 3500lph, so what size pump for the sump will I need?

The tank will be stocked with some fairly large fish with some fairly large bioloads, so the filteration needs to be tops.

The tank is 810 litres (200 gallons), before adding the volume in the sump.

Cheers guys.

I would use a 29G at a minimum, just so you have enough room for plenty of mechanical filtration. I would look into filter socks. They do a great job of getting out the debris. Also, if you don't think they are doing well enough, just get a smaller micron next time.

This is by far the most efficient design I have used as of yet.

It flows into the bag on the left... over the first wall onto the drip tray... drips down onto the scrubbies... flows under the second wall... the pump is on the right side fo the second wall...

Ah yes, I see whats going on now.

Does everyone else agree with this sort of filteration plan? The way I was told is to skip the bag, and put the water straight onto the drip tray, and let the water flow thru about an inch of foam, then onto bioballs, thn the gap underneath is for your heater, and stuff like purigen and matrix.

i'm looking to do the same with my next "project" tank. looking to keep it simple and make sure the plumbing doesn't leak. i did see a new idea on a thread that used bio max in laundry bags in the sump, with or with out bio-balls. i was thinking adding some of those to the sump and use bio-balls or spongies.

I originally made a setup much like you described. The filter sock style is much more effective and is just as easy to maintain.

and i reckon 6x turnover is majestic

Just love how the English language can be used..

Gotta get behind filter socks.
Large micron range available.
Reasonable cost.
Installation and maintenance could only be easier if someone else did it for you.
The biggie is, they do an outstanding job.

I was looking at around maybe 7000lph through the tank, with a massive spray bar going the length of the tank, to ease the flow.
