not really. they like sand, as everyone has stated. Im sure theyll live, but as stated also, they sift for food and 1mm is too big for them to sift in.

I think 1mm should be fine as long as it is smooth. I have sand/gravel (about 2-3mm) mix in my tank and mine sifts fine, course he is 7-8" which makes a huge difference. A 3" fish would not be able to sift in gravel.
