I keep three of these right now they're actually kind of nasty to their tankmates

Wow, I have found exactly the opposite. This jewel is in with a much smaller red jewel, two Kribensis that are also a little smaller, two baby black bullhead catfish, 1 rosey red minnow & a rather large crayfish.

I am suprised at how docile all of the inhabitants in the tank are.

Yeah, so far me too, I had just bought 2 from petsmart, and they are incredably shy, one stays in the cave and the other stays in the log. I wish I knew how to get them to be more brave. Got some "dither fish" to help, but its not helping enough on getting them outta the hiding spots

I have a turquoise jewel, and this thing is aggressive as hell. It's killed two other jewels and 1 common pleco. It's meaner then my Jag, it just doesnt have the size to match. It's the Mr. T of Fish :mr-t:
Or maybe I just got a mean one...

That is odd ours are only really aggresive to each other ecspecialy when mating but that is normal if your 2 are mean you may have a pair as ours started breeding at about an inch and a half. They will chase anybody then even your hand neat to watch them guard a group of fry.

mine are very agressive... but not to eachother to me!! theyr only 1.5 inches but you cant put your hand in the tank without geting bit!! awsome tho...

We have a breeding pair of these and currently about 200 fry who are small but doing quite well. These are beautiful fish. Here are some photos...very hard to photograph.

Great pictures! I have noticed that when mine hit the 2.5" mark some of the color between the Blues have turned to a brick red similar to the second and third pictures above. Looks good, but the crimson between the blues in the first and fourth pictures are out of control astounding!

Those are their breeding colors the bright red we beleive is the female our last spawn was around 200 and for a change they are all doing real good.We wonder if maybe the first batches the parents were too immature,

I have one. Most aggressive fish I've ever kept. Was keeping it in my 90 with a jack Dempsey , firemouth and salivini. Sad to report, the jewel already killed my salvini and tore all the fins up on the rest. Now it's the only resident my my 20 gallon qt tank. I'm hoping the 300 that I'm going to setup will help with the aggression issues, but this is one nasty fish. Beautiful, but ferocious

On a side note, mine started out very shy and was relatively peaceful to begin with. Now...... not so much
