ok so i know it is usually frowned upon to keep turts with cichlids but i was wondering if there are those out there who get it to work? my tank is a 5ft 120g, i have several different grow out cichlids right now and was wondering if once they got bigger i could get a turt to work with 1 or 2 of them (growouts right now are argentea, festae, vontehillo, escondido) and my bottom dwellers which are 3x pictus cats and 3xsenegal bichirs. thought i could lower the water level 7-10in and put in basking dock, which would still give me about 75g of water volume (could go down to 1sen and 1 cat if the bioload was too high), what turts would have the best chances of success (and would have to remain small enough to stay in this tank for life as i dont see a tank upgrade in the foreseeable future) was thinking maybe something like a peninsula cooter since what i read about them says they are herbivores is this true? though the fish should be big enough that any turt that would fit in my tank shouldn't bother them... any ideas (the easiest turt for me to get here would probably be the red eared slider but didn't know if that would work or not) thanks for any advice

I think your cooter gess would be a good one and also try to get a male wich dont get as big as females and also dont need to lay eggs. If your to put a turt in there you should really reduce the bio load

do you think 1 or 2 of the cichlids and the bottom dwellers would be to much? would just 2 cichlids and no bottom dwellers be ok for bioload? (would def monitor water params closely until i had stock finalized of course) but iv only ever had like baby red eared sliders that i got from new york (i know, i know i shouldn't have supported the horrible practice but i didn't know at the time, and both the little turts were deformed so died a couple months after i got them, def learned my lesson from that one:() so i mean i know turts are messy just dont know exactly how big their load is on a system (will have 2 rena Xp3s for filters, or one Xp3 and another filter if you think a different one would be better equipped for turtle mess)

Go for 2 big chiclids;) your filration sistem is ok and get if possible a turt from a rescue, you will be able to sex it and you will give a good home to a animal in need, any cooter Pseudemys sp is good, now witch to chose is hard, all are very pretty turts. I think P. nelsoni or P. rubriventris are very nice.

ok cool yeah ill look into rescues, its just turts are illegal for sale in this state :( so im not sure how many rescues there would be here but i guess i could post a wanted thing on craigslist or something, will still be a little while though because my cichlids are still fairly small (2.5-4.5in) so unless i find one that is small enough to grow out in my 20g long for a bit then i would have to wait until my fish are bigger, especially since ill want to see which of the ones i want to keep get along the best, since cichlid temperaments can change drastically once they mature lol

get red eared sliders they arnt exactly small but they grow very slow.

Yeah i like RES too would they have a chance of being compatible with my fish? i would think in my area RES would be the most available since a lot of tourists go down to SC and buy the babies illegally at the little beach stands and then don't know how to care for them properly, if RES is totally out then what are the personalities of the cooters like? are they pretty laid back or skittish, i def want something that would be fairly outgoing like RES are

ok so i posted a wanted ad for either turtle or tortoise that stays small, and i think im going to go ahead and ask both questions here instead of reposting in my tortoise thread since the same people would read both lol, so here it is, a guy contacted me saying he has a baby sulcata and that it will stay under 14in for 10yrs. is this true? what exactly is their growth rate like, because if it stays that small for that long then keeping one would be possible as i would almost certainly have a place with a yard by then, its just i dont know whether i can trust the info of a random guy off cragslist when a member on here posted thread about their sulcattas just recently (cant remember the member name:duh:) but saying they were 10 and 15 and 90 and 50lbs:WHOA: under good conditions is this how fast they would grow or is this faster than normal, as i def couldn't have a 50lb tort walking around my home in at least the next 6yrs, now to the turtle question. lady contacted me about having youn red eared slider a bit smaller than her palm (woman's hand so keep that in mind) not sure if i could get it from her as she is an hour away and only way i would get it is if she came into town or something, but how fast do they grow as well, and at that size would it still be possible to grow him out in my 20g Long for a few months and would a red eared slider nip at fish that were as large as it, or would it pretty much leave any fish it couldn't eat outright alone?

nobody wants to share their thoughts?
