I just installed a 100watt heat lamp above my turtle tank, but it's getting really hot.
Is the bulb supposed to be this hot? How long do I keep it on for?

well a 100watt bulb can heat a basking spot 100+ at least in my bearded dragons tank

your tank is only 10gallons, get a 50watt, get a temperature gauge and adjust the height of the lamp as needed to get the proper temperature range for your species of turtle

You really need to get a book on turtles to learn the basics or visit some turtle care websites.

You want to leave your lamps on 10-12yrs a day, or you can match them to the rise and set of the sun if you like. You also should have a non glass heater in the water

Edit: And in addition to your heat lamp you need a UVB bulb, (ReptiSun 10.0)
cheapest place to buy them is here

And you need to change that bulb every 6-8 months

10-12hrs per day.. not years....

My tank is not 10gallons..where did you get that?
He would barely fit in one..

i have no idea what a glass heater is but I got a turtle heater that's supposed to be 78F but is only 76.9F..

And I have a hard time adjusting the temperature to around 90~95.
It's either too low, or when I get a little closer, it gets higher and higher slowly.

Sorry, i seem to have confused you with someone else that was posting about their turtle in a 10gal

if the turtle gets too hot it will just go in the water to cool off... mine hits close to a 100 in the basking spot and when he gets hot he goes swimming .... the best bulb you could get would be a zoo med power sun does uva and uvb lighting and heat all in one;)

Nic is right, but 100 watt too close the the basking spot might be pretty hot, but it depends on your tank size and how far away the bulb is.

That's the brand of bulb I use for my Musk turtle. Of course they don't require the same amount of UVA/UVB rays as a basking turtle does. Heck, he doesn't even come out of the water to bask! But my Anacharis is growing great from the lighting!

Vicious_Fish: yeah mine is a sonora mud turtle and I didn't think he's a basking turtle(or is he???) he's either on the submerged rock or floating around. i really want to see him walking on the bottom though..
I don't have any UVB bulbs right now, but I might get the powersun after this bulb goes out. I take him out in the sun since I read "15mintues of real sunlight is better than 6hours of UVB rays in the tank"

My guy is a adult already but, does his shell still grow if I give him UVB rays?

and are those musk turtles"stinkpots" legal to keep in CA?
