I don't see why not as long as they don't make up the bulk of your turtles diet. I give my mud and musk turtles Hikari sinking algae wafers from time to time.

ok thanks!! it wouldn't take up the bulk of their diet . they eat tons of pellets, freeze dried krill and shrimp, bloodworm, earth worms, minnows, but the don't like to eat veggies or fruits. so i thought id try and use these algae things. i have tried sinking wafers but they don't notice them as they blend in with the gravel and get eaten by the algae eater.

That might help get some veggies in their diet then. You could also try hikari cichlid excel, it's pretty hi-veg so it's another option for you.

I feed that pellet to my turtles too! :)

Yeah, once they eat pellets they'll usually eat any pellets. I've kept many turtles through the years, and the only one I ever had that was in the least picky was a wild-caught adult (and apparently quite old) spotted turtle who would take nothing but cut fish. After a few weeks of this I just released it...this was years ago, and I had no idea about any issues re: releasing captive animals (natives I mean).

I don't get it.........If a Turtle, or any other animal for that matter won't eat plant matter, why are you going to still try and make them? Seems like they know what they're doing better than any Human right? There is nothing wrong with any high protein diet, especially with Turtles/Tortoises, however the problem comes down to husbandry, like anything else......

Well, I was talking about giving them a bit more veg when feeding a pellet diet. Not necessarlily to try to trick them into eating veggies.

But in general I agree, with a few exceptions. Iguanas for example, I've seen and owned iguanas who given the choice would happily eat a high-protein diet, or would pick out the bananas among their mixed fruit/veggie food bowl. They're like people in that way I suppose; they'll eat what they like whether it's good for them or not.

If you're having trouble with veggies try anacharis. It's an aquatic plant, fairly cheap and easy to grow. Every turtle I have had eat the heck out of them. To avoid having to run back to the pet store all the time you can just pick up a cheap $5 Tupperware bin throw them in there in some water and sunlight and grow your own. Watch out for snails though! Guaranteed to be on live plants and although a tasty snack for your turtle not such a tasty snack for filters and their breeding rate can get out of hand.

As for the cichlid pellets I've never seen that before but it seems like a great idea! I'll have to try it out.
