The Real Norcal
My neighbor has had these turtles all summer (2 of them that is) and they were sold to her as a male and a female Mississippi mud turtle.

Now that it is getting colder she realizes that she does not know what she is supposed to do with them in the winter and asked me.I confessed to not knowing that you were supposed to do anything with them during the winter,I figured you just leave turtle in the pond year round...

Anyhow I looked up Mississippi mud turtle and it does not look like these, also I am curious as to if it really is a male and a female because there is no noticeable difference between the two.

I told her I would take some pics and had some people I could ask as far as ID and care info,so here I am,and here are the pics:

Bottom one is female.

Thats not a red-eared slider, its a yellow-belly. Same species, different subspecies.

That depends on where you live if you want to keep them outside year-round. But anyway, you want to keep them outdoors as long as possible.

Oh and its always good to have an indoor setup anyway. You might have an emergency, cold spell, drought, etc.

definately yellow bellies ...if you live in a climate where it is warm nearly the whole year (hawaii per say) then yes outdoors is fine...if it gets cold i would be ready to bring them indoors during fall...

I don't know where you live, but it is possible for them to live outdoors all year long depending on climate. If the pond is deep enough (at least 3 feet) and you have a large tub of mud about 18" deep, they can hibernate.

good point vicous i keep forgetting given the proper condtions sliders will hibernate...
