turtle mate

There is a big difference between sliders and muds. If you get a mud turtle, it will be about 30 dollars. They are really cool and thats what I would get if I were you. Maybe I will even get one for my tank.

so are mud slidders common to find? and howmuch to they normally cost? This appears to be the only one that stays relatively small and not super agressive towards fish?

where in illinois are you? ive got two stinkpots id be willing to give to you for free if you live nearby, that is assuming youll take good care of em which im sure you will.

Look, all turtles require 10G of water to every inch, so a 4" turtle needs a 40G minimum. 2x 4" turtles would need 80G and so on.

although, that is being very generous. plenty of sources say it is fine to keep an adult musk turtle in a 10 gallon. the extra space is of course better for the animal, but its fine to keep in smaller tanks also.

you've never seen a 4" turtle in a 10g have you? doesn't look good, kinda like seeing an oscar in a 10g. even a 4" musk turtle is going to need a decent amount of room, imo a 36"x16"x12" tank would be a min. for a turtle that size.

are turtles like fish, where a longer tank would be better than a taller tank?
Currently I'm living in East Peoria

Yes...and I personally think a 20-gal long is perfectly fine for one adult musk turtle. Musk turtles are not baskers and also are not as active as other aquatic turtles, so IMO, a musk turtle would probably not use much of the space of a 40-gal.

kinda, you want the largest footprint possible. a 40g breeder or 75g would be great because it is long enough but also has a decent width(consider a 55g that is 48" long but only 13" wide) hieght isn't too big a concern, you only need the tank to be tall enough to supply a sufficent water section and not enable the turtle to climb out at the same time.

so I gather from what I've been reading on this post and searching in others that the best match for:
- 4-8" max size
- mostly water
- cheap
- not too agressive with fish
a musk or stinkpot would work best?
chances are I'll probabbly stick em in a 20long or similar sized custom built tank

after stoping by some ls and talking with some co-workers, I've come up with a short list of some recommendations.

- 4-10" max size
- partial to mostly water
- cheap
- not too agressive with fish

-Red ear slider (may get too big?)
-Eastern painted
-Mississippi Map
-Softshell
-Musk (stinkpot)
-Southern painted
-Red belly
-Western painted
-Common Snapper
-Sideneck
-Yellow belly
-River Cooter (too big?)

What do you think about those recommendations based on the above post information?
