Turtle pond options...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the offer, I may just hit you up. I only spent 4 hours digging today, but as hot as it was, and as many roots as there were, I may be too sore to work on it tomorrow :D. And tomorrow's supposed to be just as hot...:irked:

The only thing I had going in my favor was that the ground is still somewhat soft and wet from all that rain we had earlier in the week.

PM me your phone number, maybe I'll give you a call. Even if its not to help out with the pond, you could always come check out my tanks. I've got some extra shortnose gars if you want one :naughty:.

I just finished digging a pond for my mother that she designed and planned out, it had alot of big roots from a very old oak tree that was removed before the poll was installed and im talking about a few roots near a foot thick but they were dead so they were semi-rotted. She didnt have a very big space picked out where she wanted it but i adjusted her plans to make it winter safe for the fish. Its in a small "used to be" flower garden beside her pool, so the measurements are a bit wierd but its what i had to work with, it ended up being 42 inches wide by 10 foot long and starting out at 12 inches deep for plants stepping off to 5 foot deep. Getting down to around 4 feet i got into some hard clay that a spade shovel could barely budge. Sorry for rambling on but I just went through the same thing with the digging on 90 degree humid weather. BTW the pond looks great cant wait to see it finished with the happy occupants.

Looks like you have a good start going. Keep up the good work!

Thanks everyone. I didn't get any work done on it yesterday (hit 96F in my backyard, and the fan on my A/C went out, so it hit 86F in my living room).

I'm hoping I can get working on it again after work during this week. If I can have it done by this weekend, I'll be putting a liner in it early next week, probably. Then I've gotta build a filter and get a big enough pump for it.

I know I'll need at least a 1,500-2,000 gph pump for this pond (plus a couple smaller ones for extra water movement). Any suggestions on which pump I should get?

Those pictures make my back hurt :D

My back does hurt pretty bad, but my right elbow hurts the most. Every time I jabbed the shovel down and hit a new root it got jarred. Hurts like hell.

it will be worth it once you get the animals in there.

boy you got a big softie your turtle shouldn't mess with your gar but if you keep the turtle i would suggest fencing you may think its unnecessary but there are horror stors about what a few curious raccoons can do although if its 4 ft deep your turtle will have no problem evading them something to consider

i could post this on turtle times maybe one of them will have some more insight
that is if you want me too

I do plan on putting fencing around part of the pond, which is the area I'm setting up for basking for the turtle(s). The rest of the pond will probably have large stones set so that the turtles can't get out that way (and raccoons/possums shouldn't be able to reach in).

At least, that's the plan.
