make sure your turtle can get out of the water to dry off
you should have a basking spot of atleast 86 degrees and your better off keeping the water at 78 to 82

I found if water to warm 78 above they dont bask as much.

You find that high works best for you, what type turtle?

Isnt 70 degree water bit to cool ?

True, it is a little cool but Painted Turtles are one of the most northern turtle species in the world and are fine with these types of temperatures. Still, if it's a hatchling or yearling I would bump the water temp up to the mid 70's.

Yeah these guys are pretty cold hardy. I've actually seen them sunning themselves on ice in the late fall and early spring near where I live.

I find them to be one of the prettiest turtles as adults They seem to look nicer than most other turtles like sliders and Florida cooters.

I dont think any painteds around here only sliders, soft shells .

They really are nice looking turtles. I honestly don't know why they breed so many RES for the pet trade when Painteds are the better choice. they're prettier, hardier and stay smaller making them easier to keep than an adult RES.

I'm pretty sure the Southern Painted Turtles range ends just outside of Florida.

I am a complete noob when it comes to Turtle keeping but heres my setup. Small Painted turtle in a 20 gallon High tank with a turtle dock and a UV 5 bulb. I have recently noticed that the turtles shell is looking like it is peeling around the edge. Almost like a full layer is coming off. I do weekly water changes and run a filstar XP1 filter on the tank. I keep the tank water around 70 degrees. I was wondering if this peeling is kind of like molting or is it something to worry about. I feed repto-min and occasionally some jumbo krill if i thaw too much for the fish. I just pulled one of the pieces off it feels like a layer of thick dead hard skin. seems quite brittle. If this is a problem please let me know what I am doing wrong. I strive to provide the best possible care to all my pets.

If your turtle out grows the 20 high tank at home depot they sell those 32 inch long plastic bins and though I am only using it till weather warms up again to take the turtles back out.
I find as long as only filled half way up they work great, dont warp, warm up faster and hold heat great but granted need a complete flat surface to lay on .

Yes they are nice. Red devil has a pair.

I should have gotten one over my "invisible" turtle (map turtle) which hides close to 24/7 lol .

I am kidding I like him but the painteds like sliders and cooters (have 1 male cooter) are very tame and again the painted as adult looks the nicest IMO.
