Turtle Tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks, TheBloodyIrish. And yeah, I know he'd get out of the tank eventually. He's only about 1.5 inches right now so im not too worried for the time being.

I've heard that, as well as quick fish like danios. He's got guppy fry in there right now for food that are evading him without difficulty. Unfortunately, my dad doesn't want me to have fish in there with him. At least not yet. We're looking for reptiles or amphibians, mostly.

There is not really much of anything you can keep with him. There are some options, but most greatly depend on tank size. Other turtles would be a good option. There are an assortment of fish you can keep with him. Cichlids are a good option, type will depend on tank size. Fast swimmers like danios and silver dollars would also be a good option. I have had relatively good luck with things liek crayfish. As long as they have a safe retreat they can do quite well with aquatic turtles. They are also a good option because they will help keep things clean. Things like you are thinking of would require very large setups. Even with semi-aquatic snakes like garters, the setups for one and the other are quite different. If I may ask, why do you want something besides the turtle? They are quite interesting and I can't imagine much else being more active or responsive to the keeper, besides endotherms.

He is an eastern painted turtle?
What size tank do you have for him?

He's temporarily in a 10 gal until we can afford something bigger. Don't worry, I know I have to upgrade.

Thanks very much for the help. The only problem is, for the time being, my dad won't let me get another turtle or fish to put in there.:wall:

Why not?
What size tank are you planning on?

I raise convict cichlids for feeders for some of my predatory fish. I put a couple of small ones in with my Stinkpot for him to eat. Well, they were way too fast for him to catch and now live in his tank. If you have enough room you might be able to get this species to survive in your turtle tank. Just give them a few places to hide from a hungry turtle.

My dad won't let me get fish because we don't have a filter for him yet, and as for another turtle, i have no clue. If I were to get another, I'd get the one that lived in the tank with him before. Cute lil Westie that didn't really like me very much heheh. For tank size, we aren't really sure yet. We have plenty of time though, as he's a tiny little thing now and we have a rubbermaid for when he outgrows the tank.

And Viscious_Fish, thanks. One he's a bit bigger, and I have enough room for them, I'll get some cichlids for him. He's got guppy fry in there now that he can't catch for his life. I have to catch them for him and handfeed him. I'm sure the convicts will be perfectly fine lol. On a scale of one to 10, how difficult are they to keep? The only cichlids I've ever had were angels.

I give convicts an 8 out of 10 on the easy scale, maybe higher if they were able to breath air like a betta or a gar. Heck mine are alive and I don't even have a filter running in my musk turtle's tub at the moment. I just change the water every day and it's heated to around 78F˚ degrees. Plus if your turtle was to kill a convict (unlikely) they are very cheap. You can usually find people giving them away, like me! Anyone need convicts? :D

Cool! I'll ask my dad wen he gets home later! Are there any other cichlids or fish that operate the same way?
