I would go with a common musk turtle, they look awesome, only need a 40 gal aquarium, and don't make as much of a mess compared to other species

u might be able to keep a western painted. they get about 7 inches front to back full grown. males are smaller wen full grown. i have three babies n my 75 now.

I'd go with a common musk turtle. After keeping turtles for almost two decades they still are one of my favorite species. This book has some good beginner information.

Mississippi mud turtles (Kinosternon subrubrum hippocrepis) are a good alternative to the common musk turtle; they have colorful plastrons as juveniles, too, with some even having bright red/orange coloration in that area.

They usually stay around 7-8 inches, but in captivity it's not unusually for females to reach closer to ten inches.

Musk if I were you - safest bet.

Map if you knew for certain you were getting a MALE only.

I have a Male False Map and he is about 4 yrs old and about 4 inches and really shouldn't get much bigger if at all at this point.

I've had my razorback musk for over a year. Its easy to care for doesn't bother my fish! Kind of a picky eater compared to most turtles. Let us know what u go with
