Ever hear of a stinkpot getting impacted eating off the gravel?

No, but I suppose it could happen. They usually know if something is edible or not after chewing on it a few times. If they do manage to swallow a stone, it should be small enough for them to pass. The only reason I have a bare bottom tub for my turtles is because it's much easier to clean.

Yeah they're like fat little sumo wrestlers when you hold them up.

Stinkpots found in the south are usually much darker then those found in the North. My one stinkpot is from Florida and is very dark compared to my other one which was found near my house in Pennsylvania.

Yeah it is. It's just another one of the geographic variations of Sternotherus odoratus who have the 3rd largest range in North America I believe after Common Snappers and Painted Turtles. No subspecies exist but in some populations shell shape is slightly different as well as coloring. In some areas of the country where they feed on a lot of mollusks the heads of some individuals have evolved much bigger for crushing the shells of their prey.
