Is this taboo or can I keep a turtle with my south american cichlids, aro, and rtc?

If so what kind of turtle would be best? is it ok if they dont have a rock to rest on?

Thanks
Larry

you can keep aquatic turtles with your fish but the turtle may try to eat it so get one on a smaller scale.
and yes they need a basking platform or something rest on outside of water, also you need a basking light
so they can bask.

i have a spiny soft shell turtle in my 450 with or ray cat fish and some others every one gets along just fine

i would suggest any of the soft shell turtles

do matamatas need a basking area ? i know for a fact fly river turtles( pig nosed turtles) go along with most peoples fish

mata mata get way big i dont think thats a good idea

mata matas don't get any bigger then softshells.. infact softshells are fish eaters, and if you are talking a florida softy they get massive... and will actively hunt even larger fish, where mata matas tend to only eat small fish.. they will lie in wait and "vaccum" up small fish to eat.... and are imo pretty boreing turtles. Any turtle mixed with fish can = eaten fish. plain and simple. rarely does it work long-term. Turtles are also very dirty animals so make sure you accomidate filtration and water changes to match. You can also easily lose a small turtle to your fish eating it.

people do it with varying degrees of success... look up threads here about mixing turtles and fish.. 90% end up with eaten fish or eaten turtles. If you do decide to do it do your research on the species of turtle you want to keep and it's individual needs, before tossing it in. BTW most people w/ FRT (fly river turtles) report fish loses from the turtle and it's rare that a FRT doesn't attack it's tank-mates at some point.

the spiny soft shell dose get big but even when i had mine in with fish much smaller then him he didnt touch them and when i (very rarely ) feed feeder fish he is compleaty un interested and i might add males dont get even close to the same size as females in a year of having my spiny soft shell i have had no problems except the massive bio load
