Turtles and fish

i've seen PNT with so called feng shui tanks here in my place and it works perfectly.

I have 2 diamondback female turtles with some community fish, guppies, barbs, sharks, loaches, and tetra's. Generally they do not go after the sharks, loaches, or catfish. I have been keeping them together for a year now and they have not killed or eaten any of the loaches, sharks, or catfish, but go after mainly the guppies and tetras. Usually its the brighter colored guppies and tetras that get taken out.

Every turtle is different and I have seen turtles that will eat any fish put into an aquarium.

Be prepared for a VERY messy disorganized tank. Turtles are VERY strong and will move everything you put in there. I have some pretty large rocks and they can still move them. I also feed them in tubs out of the aquarium with the aquarium water. This means more water changes because of taking so much water out but with turtles this is very necessary because they are so messy.

It can work, I've done it. The turtles to avoid are soft shells, sliders, and maps. They all look at fish as nothing but tasty treats. Size is a big issue. Turtles grow slowly and live a long time. Get the smallest turtle possible (stink pots stay small and do not have a big fish appetite) and pair them with fish that are slightly bigger than they are. Space is a big thing too. If they are cramped you are going to have more issues. And lastly, I agree with the filtration comment. But the biggest filter you can afford on there because your bioload is about to jump.

i have a turtle outside my house and i feel bad because it gets 115s here in az so i put it in with my oscar n 3 spotted catfish..in a 55 gallon tank..turtle loved it and didnt bother my fish but the oscar kept taking some head shots...alot of time missing it..left it in the for 1 hour and he was right next to the turtle all the time waiting for it to find a right moment to strike..oscar gave up after .I wasnt comfortable leaving her in so i took her out...my oscar is about 8-10 inches turttle is 4-5 inches...turtle has to wait until i get my 200 gallon to put her back in....doing a 3d for my 200 and for the 55 gallon with a basking area for turtle...so it depends on your fish and turtle....if they get along not all fish/turtles are the same..

Are you sure they are DBT? There are some turtles that are somtimes called DBT's in error. The reason I ask is because DBTs WILL eat any fish available to them. From guppies to 30" Koi.

Also, depending on the type of turtle you get, females will need a nesting spot, so if you do get a turtle, try to get a male.

mshill90 do know a lot about turtles? how do you sex a pink belly side necked turtle? can i get some 411 on them? i wanna breed them i have one already and plan to get another but it seems like your a lot more knowledgeable than i am about turtles so ya :) lol

For sidenecks, it's typically sexed by toenail size, and tail size.

Shorter nails, and tail means female.

Longer means male.
