mississippi maps, as in G. kohnii? You're gonna run out of room in your 40g pretty quick. Also, it sounds like you probably did business with turtleshack or turtlesale, in which case you'll be lucky if they last a week. If not, then way to dodge a bullet.

I've heard mixed things about Turtleshack as well, some good and some bad. But, to say there "only going to last a week" is a bit extreme I think...

Depending on what sex they are, you may or may not have to upgrade to a larger aquarium in the future. Males tend to stay pretty small and only get to around 5". If you happen to get a female or two though they can get about double that size, in which they would definitely outgrow a 40gal and need something bigger.

Here's a good caresheet on them: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/caresheet-mississippi_map.htm

Good luck with them!

I didn't say they would only last a week. I just said it was likely. And I've done no statistical studies of the lifespan of turtleshack/turtlesale hatchlings, but I know of hundreds of cases where they are received with advanced shell rot, fungus, infections, and RI. Most of the costumers of these websites are new owners, and do not have the resources or will to give the proper care to the ailing turtles they receive. Many arrive dead, and many more die within weeks of arrival. Questionable practices abound. But my comment was based on speculation, and since we don't know the turtle's point of origin, I'll forego talk of these companies.

40g is adequate for a single male kohni. It's not ideal for a single male kohni. It's not adequate for two males, or a single female. It's miles away from ideal for two females. The general rule of thumb would leave you at (ideally) 75g for two males, and anywhere from 90g to 150g for two females. Also be prepared to separate them. There are several factors that can lead to aggression (which can lead to death in turtles) so it's a safe practice to always be prepared to separate cohabitating turtles.

The caresheet provided by cjdesmit is a great one, and the ATP forum is the best around for turtle keepers.
