There you go. Perfect example. It's tough to get the painteds as a small size. Thats all.

i should also add that the turtle has killed several plecos and a small bicher in the past

Well the pleco is surprising, bichir not. Bichir wouldn't be a good choice since they're kind of sluggish swimmers. Plecos can get up and go if need be but bichirs crawl more or less. If you put tight hiding places where the turtle can't get into the plecos should be ok.

I have had my turtle/fish setup for almost a year now. here it is... a few months ago...

I have three 5" koi, two 4" comets, two 6" pacu and one 6" Red eared slider. the happilly live together and have grown well in the year. The turtle did eat 2 plecos that I tried to put in there. One thing that I must stress for such setups is FILTRATION my 55 gallon tank is fitted with a system that is designed for 150 gallon tanks, cycles the water 8 times an hour.

feeding becomes interesting, the turtle is on a diet, and tries to eat the fish food.

No one mention podocnemis or Asian river turtles as a good canidate. Although they get extremly large, young ones are great to house with fish, aswell as the red headed podoc (smaller species that grows up to 14"). I have a few subadult P. Unifilis housed with koi outside and I have no problems.

I've never considered pink belly sidenecks to be a "big" species. In my opinion I think if you have plenty space and plenty visual barriers most fish will survive. I buy groups of fish when i want to add more fish to my tanks that house turtles. Because I've noticed that some will get eaten, while others seem to "learn" and acknowledge that there is turtle with them.
