Me and the wife are planning to get a bigger tv for the living room, we are currently using lcd. The price difference between the two is like $200-$300. All I know is that led uses less power, doesn't generate heat and has a longer life.
Not really sure about the picture clarity though. Checked their displays and it doesn't look much different to me. My question is; is it worth it? Thanks.

The picture quality is also slightly better, and added to the other things you already mentioned make them superior. Added to the fact that you'll have the tv for 5 years or so would make it a better investment long term. Go LED mate.

Thanks bro. We'll be getting a 55", upgrading from a 32". Viewing distance is 12' so I think it will be the perfect size.

LED is a type of LCD tv but regardless LED is better for the reasons already stated.

btw, how do we know led has the longer life? they haven't been on the market long enough to know that

LED TVs are LCD TVs. The LED refers to how the LCD's are lit. Standard LCD TVs are backlit with tubes while LED TVs are LCD's that are backlit by LED's.

I would say go plasma and be done. My 50 inch panasonic looks better than my in-laws new sharp 70". No matter what light array these lcds use, the viewing angle is terrible unless you sit straight in front of it. Plasma has drawbacks too, because of the technology they have to be made with higher quality materials and use some metal and glass which makes them heavier. Also if you put the tv in a well lit room you will see more reflections off glass than plastic screens. But oooooh that true 600hz display looks so much better than the fake 240hz that lcds have.
