TV upgrade: LCD or LED?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im currently using an led monitor, you notice the color differences immediately. lcd white is actually yellow comparing it side by side. that alone was a major factor on why i choose to stick with what im using.

Like a true MFK, you should convince your wife to put a fish tank in the space of the TV...;)

J/K...LED is nice...I unfortunately spent $2500 on a 40" glass tube nearly 10 years ago...the largest and the last glass tube sony ever made...it was 1080i too...280 lbs :( and it won't die....

LED is a type of LCD tv but regardless LED is better for the reasons already stated.

btw, how do we know led has the longer life? they haven't been on the market long enough to know that

Hello; The led backlit TV's have not been out a real long time but the LED's have been in use for a very long time so their running time is known. Also the non LED backlit LCD TV’s are backlit by fluorescent tubes. Fluorescent tubes are known to become dimmer over time much like the ones we use for our tanks.
I faced the dilemma on what kind of TV to get a year or so ago. I went with a plasma. While the LED backlit LCD TV’s are supposed to use less electricity, there have been improvements to the plasmas on that issue and on the burn in issue. I wanted an LED backlit LCD but they cost about $250 more for a similar size. I also found on the Samsung plasma that I bought has multiple settings. I lowered the brightness on one setting for watching casual TV and adjusted it up on the other settings for movies and special programs.
The other reason for picking a plasma had to do with the picture quality. While my research found that many of the problems with LCD picture quality have been improved they were, at that time, still plagued with pixilation and artifacts to some degree. I took a 60 Hz LCD home and once I noticed these artifacts I could not un-see them after. A 120 Hz LCD with a sub 4 millisecond refresh rate should not show these problems as much, but I have not had a chance to watch them outside of a store.
The plasma TV’s are very close to the old CRT types and have a great picture. Fast motion is good for action scenes. I am still a bit concerned about the longevity of the plasma. Mine has done well for a little over a year now and I know of a couple of others in use for longer.
I will at some point go with an LED backlit LCD TV as they do appeal to me for their energy savings and predicted long life. I suspect that the prices will become more reasonable and that the picture issues will be improved in time.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

LED 110%.. I have the new 60" Samsung LED and it is the best TV i've ever owned hands down.

LED is supossed to have a better picture, but LCD is also very good. It all comes down to personal preference and price point.

Both are good, but get what you feel your more comfortable with.
