I'm finishing my basement starting in a couple weeks. As I do it, I'll be incorporating twin 180g tanks side by side, for a "wall" of fish. I am planning on making it a ray/gar/arowana tank with one of each in each tank. However I want a gar that won't feel cramped after a couple years in a tank that's only 6' long. I've heard of breeds that don't get that large, so I was going for something like that. My LFS has everything I need, but I was wondering if I'd run into any problems with them. The tank will be FW, and I'd like some ideas on some smaller tank mates so the tank doesn't feel as "empty".

The only problem I see is that none of the 3 fish you have chosen are suited for a 6x2 footprint
i've heard of smaller species of ray that could live in a tank that size but arowanas and gars would out grow that tank in a hurry

Maybe I need to look at building a custom 12'x2'x2' tank for the room. I've seen smaller rays taht are good, but I was concerned with the gars. Thanks for the heads up.

Still be too small... cause its still only 2 foot of width. 3'+ gar have a hard time turning around! Ever U-turned a semi-truck in a driveway?

Since when do Florida Gars get larger than 2'? I have a 220 with a 6x2x30" footprint and I had multiple people from THIS site tell me that it would be fine in that tank for life. So which is it?
