The largest factor to your question is ambient room temp, as in how many degrees does the tank need to be heated above the actual temp of the room that it is located.

For those concerned about sticking in the ON position (all makes & models can and do fail - including this brand), then use a controller as an added layer of protection.
 
Come the freezing cold winter in Socal will come the true test haha but as of now it looks like it's still holding a steady temp of 84 so I added a couple of fish.

You're kidding right? :P Freezing cold winter in SoCal lol, I don't even use any heaters in any of my tank for years! All my tanks almost equal to room temperature and all my live stock don't even seem to care when the house temp around 60 winter (lower at night) or 90 in summer in living room, and in my room temp drop below 50 cause I keep my window open even in winter day or nigh, I don't run AC (Heater) in winter.
*Also, your water should be around 84+ without heater in SoCal summer lol that's my tank temp as it now without heater.
