Two BGK in one tank concern...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am on holidays atm, but I'll see what I can do in the new year about a video :grinno:

I got the BGK with Firemouths & Polleni small spot in a bare bottom 4'x1.5'x1.5' tank with 4 pieces of driftwood. The BGK can hide in a PVC pipe or the driftwood. I buffer my water with a dozen oyster shells in one of the canisters & got some limestone/coral in the tank next to the intake as well. So my water is pH7.2 to 7.4 at 26 Celsius. GH & KH would be about the same given my buffering method.

I am getting some pebbles around 2" next year & will put the two BGK in the 3'x1.5'x1.5 on they own with driftwood on the pebbles somehow. I don't want the food to get in between the pebbles & get spoiled tough.
Cheers, Happy New Year to Youl :headbang2

I got stuck indoors unfortunately, so here is the video link to my 65g:popcorn:

Forgive me, but I am not sure how to place "YouTube" in the post or edit the post if I stuff it up... You may get better viewing choices by going to the site it self anyhow :grinno:

I am planing on moving all my Anubias to this 4'/65g & placing only the two BGK's in the 3'/47g with pebbles around 2" size & driftwood for decor/hiding. At this stage I am planning on leaving the lights off & will concentrate on water quality/flow/stability & feeding.
Happy New Year 2 U All :headbang2

One of my favorite fish Period. I got a specimen last year right at or a tad under 7 inches. He's almost 9.5 inches now. I know that sounds fast but i powerfeed :headbang2 Where did you find a 10 inch specimen? I had to wait 2 months for mine. But addressing what you said, about the mouth, specifically the overbite. I have heard exactly the same thing, that the males have the larger mouths and an over bite that kind of makes them look like a horse. Hope you can get them breeding.

I remember someone here on MFK who managed to breed them. They said that the males have a horse-like face, while the females have a puppy-like face, and that females will also have a more rounded area on their necks. I've also heard a rumor that when they mate, the male's tail turns red, so maybe it's gonna happen soon...

Sorry im still figuring this stuff out lol. I like the wood in your aquarium. If they do breed tho those cichlids are gonna tear up their eggs

Thanks for your comments! I got the BGK's from other hobbyists on SALE
I would love to leave the BGK's in the 4'/65g tank or have a bigger tank for them, but I am not sure I should put the Firemouths & the Polleni in a 3'/47g either & have the 4'/65g tank for the BGK's only.
I could possibly have a 6'x2'x2' in the living room, but I am not sure the floor boards would take the weight over time or my wife would approve.

Another option is to put the 2" pebbles in the 4'/65 tank as it is on one side where I don't feed & see what happens. The BGK are egg scatterers & prefer smooth round pebbles for spawning. However the bio-load would not be in favor of any spawn there.

I still think the 3'/47g is a better option for the BGK's looking at Nitrates & fish to water ratio. I do weekly water-changes at 25% in the 4' tank & around 30% in the 3' tank religiously.

If I end up lucky & they spawn, I would consider dedicating the 4'/65g to the BGK & sell the other fish so the 3'/47 could become a home for the little BGK's to grow out from.
However at this point I can only see 2 BGK's that are more active/happy vs when there was only one BGK in the tank...
Cheers

Just a quick update, I've put all my Anubias / Java-Fern in the 4 footer & the fish seem to like it a lot I recon. I can only see the glass bottom now if I am looking for it :grinno:

Both BGK's are fairly active, especially when the lights are out! The Aqua-Glo tube has a lot of red / blue light for plant growth & appears dim to our eyes. I've been thinking of adding a Power-Glo, but it may get to bright with both...

Well, it looks like I have 2 females after all
So I am hunting for a male BGK locally & hopefully I'll get spawns with a threesome :naughty:

This may take quite some time, due to adult BGK not being often up for sale around here...

I have find a BGK male in the LFS, but it's not for sale  Plus it looks like the tip of his tail is being eroded, so he is suffering for some reason. I have voiced my concern, but got pushed aside :screwy:
My BGK's tail end/tip looks a little like an arrowhead, not straight or braking up. I feel like calling the RSPCA on them (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) :nilly:

Cheers

I have 5 BGKs in one tank. They range from 6 inches to about 13 inches. They get along and I do not see any fighting. Would love to get more in there but it is hard to buy them at such a large size. Mostly private sellers will sell them at larger sizes and not stores.
