Two Growing Oscars - One Picky With Eating - Picture Inside

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's an odd one. This was years ago when my O was little, but the only food he wouldn't eat was NLS pellets. It's unusual to have one not eat hikari products.

Aside from looking tiny compare to the lutino, his colors look great, nice bright eyes, etc.

Does it poop normally?
I have 2 oscars that eat everything but when it comes to hikari they try 1,2 and leave the rest...

I know it probably is not the best nutritionally but he really likes Tetra Cichlid Sticks - at least he is eating.

I had a jack do the same thing. He only ate tetra sticks. He still made it to 10"+ in about 2-3 years on it. It could be the round shape that's also deterring the smaller oscar. Northfin sells similarly shaped food that floats. It's called Northfin Tropical Sticks. It might be easier to get him to that than the round pellets.

I would stop feeding peas to oscars. Feeding peas to a growing carnivore/piscore/insectivore can slow down their growth rate. Studies has shown that it can cause intestinal swelling, which increases stress, slowing growth. There is no need to feed peas to oscars if fed properly.

Thanks, I will check out the Northfin sticks and stop feeding peas.

Hi DK, was wondering how you went on with finding the right food.
I have two very picky little oscars, around three inches now, I have been feeding them :
Hakari cichlid gold, sometimes but like your's spits it out
freeze dried mealworm, nope
frozen blood worm, yes and no,
bit's of restaurant quality prawn...OMG yes
I think I spoilt them too much with the prawn bits lol.
I was also wondering if fasting them for a day or two might make them less fussy, could the brain trust help me here?
Hope your little tank dog is doing ok!

They will have to fast 1 week or 2 weeks to get them pellet trained. The pellets should be no larger than Hikari Baby pellets at that size. If it's too large, then they can't easily swallow the pellets whole.

Cheers mate, I have been soaking them first...but. I've found some baby pellets I can order online locally which I will give a go.

Mine have grown quite a bit. What I found for my picky Oscar was Tetra Cichlid Sticks. He still goes crazy for them and while now, his main staple is Northfin, I still give him some Sticks as a treat every now and then. The Sticks were able to get him over the young age where they need more food required to grow.

Northfin I looked at but cannot get it here in the sth pacific, $48 postage if I buy online. The tetra sticks, cheapest I can get with postage is around $38, the downside of living on a small island in the middle of nowhere. Your oscars look fantastic, glad to hear you found something he likes

Darn, too bad. Luckily, as my tiger got older, he is eating a lot more thoroughly, hardly any debris comes out of his gills now. He is less picky too and will eat Omega One pellets which he did not when he was younger.
