here is something you can try that will probably help you out the next time on water change. in the past, i made the same mistake twice sucking up my clown loaches, they died. so from then on, i found a piece of screen/mesh that have holes big enough to suck up all the junk but not big enough to suck your fish. i wrapped it around the phyton with a rubberband and it works great ever since and no more dead fish. i would put the screen/mesh on the phyton for the tank with the smaller fish. for the tank with the bigger fish, i would pull it off easily so that it can suck up all the bigger pieces of junks that might not fit thru the screen/mesh. give it a try and let us know how it works out. good luck!
